Butt Chisel 1/4 inch (6.35 mm) PM-V11 Steel
VERITAS

Product information

Short chisels are manufactured in wider sizes than most other chisels. This makes them very useful when it comes to working on larger surfaces, such as mortising for hinges. Many users find that the shorter chisels provide better control while working. The blades made from PM-V11 steel taper from the neck to the edge, making them stiffer and more durable. The sides are parallel and beveled (to the mirror side) for maximum maneuverability and minimal friction when working into angled corners (such as with dovetails) or tight recesses.

The mirror sides of the chisels are lapped. The connection between the blade and the handle is made using a tang and a bell-shaped ferrule. The tang is flattened to prevent the handle from rotating.

The handle, made from Canadian hard maple, is thermally treated. This process changes the cellular structure of the wood, virtually eliminating swelling and shrinking due to changes in humidity. The handle is designed to fit comfortably in the hand. The end is rounded to resist chipping from angled mallet blows.

These short chisels range from 190 mm (7-1/2 inches) to 203 mm (8 inches) in length. The blades are approximately 76 mm (3 inches) long. The 6.3 mm (1/4 inch) chisel has a bevel angle of 30°, while the others have a 25° angle. All chisels also feature a 2° micro-bevel. Before first use, you only need to give the chisels a quick strop.
