Product information
Contrary to some rumors, it still exists: the veneer hammer. Once an essential tool in any carpenter’s workshop, it now tends to live in the shadows. Undeservedly so—because for tasks like gluing individual edges by rubbing or making veneer repairs on old furniture, it is a great labor-saving device. This veneer hammer comes from the quality forge of Picard.
When veneering, it can happen that certain spots have not adhered, either because too little glue was applied in a spot or because the wood has an unnoticed depression. These bubbles—called „Kürschner” by carpenters—can be seen or felt by tapping with the fingertip.
If hot glue was used, the carpenter is in luck: Apply moisture, if necessary make a small cut with a sharp knife in the direction of the grain, and use a veneer strip to insert some glue under the loose veneer, then rub with the heated veneer hammer—and the problem is solved. Additionally, it is very well suited for rubbing down veneer edges.
The veneer hammer comes from a time when hot glue, typically bone glue, was predominantly used. Even today, bone glue is used where reversibility, meaning the ability to undo the process without damage to the object, is required. This is mainly the case in restoration work today.
Even in the artisanal production of individual furniture pieces, one should consider the advantages of traditional techniques.
