Product information
These mortise chisels are truly solid. The cutting edges are 12.7 mm thick at the end of the bevel and maintain a consistent width throughout their length to ensure good guidance in the mortise hole. The cross-section of the chisels is slightly tapered to reduce friction with the hole walls and allow for slight corrections during chiseling. To facilitate deep chiseling, the primary bevel has an angle of 25°. The secondary bevel angle is 35°, providing a stable and long-lasting sharp edge. To ease chip removal, the upper end of the bevel is rounded and can serve as a good fulcrum point. The connection between the blade and the handle is made with a tang and a bell-shaped ferrule. The tang is flattened to prevent the handle from rotating. The ferrule, turned from a solid blank, sits directly on the neck of the iron. The handle is made from heat-treated Canadian maple (hard maple). The heat treatment changes the cell structure of the wood, making it significantly more resistant to moisture penetration, thus preventing shrinking or swelling. The handle is designed to fit well in the hand and has small flats parallel to the blade to provide tactile cues for the correct finger position. The end is domed and features a stainless steel ring to prevent chipping from mallet strikes. The chisels have an overall length between 295 mm and 311 mm, with blades measuring between 138 mm and 159 mm in length. They are ground to the extent that you only need to strop them before the first use.
