Tapered Tenon Cutter 3/8 in. = 9.525 mm
VERITAS

Product information

With this tool, it is easy to create tapered tips on turned parts, wooden dowels, or chair spindles, such as for rustic furniture made from wildwood. This cutting device is simply used like a pencil sharpener, whether you rotate the tool or the workpiece. Suitable for all types of wood, whether dry or wet, hard or soft wood.

Although the zinc die-cast body of this tapered tenon cutter is identical in construction to the dowel cutter offered by the same manufacturer, it differs in that the straight blade creates a straight tapered tip, while the dowel cutter’s rounded blade creates a rounded shoulder. (If you already have the dowel cutter from Veritas, you only need to purchase the straight blade to create straight tapered tenons.) A note: the rounded blade for dowel making should only be used in the 3 smallest tenon cutters (No. 308635, No. 308636, No. 308637).

The specified size for each tenon cutter refers to the smallest diameter – the largest diameter is 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) larger over the entire length of 2-1/2 inches (63.5 mm) - see example sketch to the left. The sizes 3/8 inch, 1/2 inch, and 5/8 inch are generally sufficient for chair making. For longer tenons, it is recommended to first work with a larger tenon cutter and then use the narrower one. If you have all 5 sizes, you can create any tenon diameter up to a maximum of 1-1/8 inch (28.5 mm) in diameter and a length of 2 inches (50.8 mm) in a single operation.

In principle, the tapered tenon cutters from Veritas are nothing more than the dowel stick cutters from the same manufacturer, with the difference that the straight blades of this tapered tenon cutter are suitable for making tapered tenons, such as on round turned parts or rustic furniture, to fit precisely into tapered beveled holes. Therefore, these tenon cutters are particularly suitable for processing the tenons of Windsor chairs. The application is simple: use it just like a pencil sharpener by either turning the tenon cutter or the workpiece.
*
Caution:* Do not use these tenon cutters with a drill to make dowels, for example. The high-speed rotations lead to significant heat development, and the zinc die-cast body becomes extremely hot!
