A spring on the side of these steel bench dogs allows for secure positioning at any desired height. The attached brass jaws reduce damage to sharp tools if you accidentally hit them.
These bench dogs are recommended when constructing a new workbench. For old workbenches with frayed and widened bench dog holes, it is usually easier to first fill these holes with wood. This can be done by using a 35 mm Forstner bit (with a drill press) to turn the frayed rectangular hole into a clean round one, and then gluing in cross-grain wood plugs made with a tenon cutter with a 35 mm diameter. In this clean surface, new holes for round bench dogs can then be easily drilled.
