Scroll saws are somewhat larger and more stable than coping saws and are typically equipped with a pin-end saw blade. The saw blade is not simply tensioned as with the coping saw but is hooked into a notch in the saw frame with the locking pins and then tensioned. This allows for higher tension and stability.
The tasks that can be performed with a scroll saw are similar to those with coping saws and all small hand saws, except that tight curve cuts are hardly possible. The selection of saw blades is significantly more limited than with coping saws. If speed is essential, scroll saws outperform coping saws. And when things get a bit rougher, scroll saws can withstand more.
