Jack planes are planes with a single iron, meaning they do not have a chipbreaker, which in other planes ensures that the shaving is broken upon removal. By breaking the shaving, it prevents the wood fibers from being lifted before the cutting edge of the plane due to the fiber structure of the wood, which can lead to an uneven surface when planing. However, this is not a concern with the jack plane.
Its task is to remove material quickly and in large amounts, essentially rough leveling or „smoothing”. The irons have a width of 48 mm. The body of the plane is made from beechwood.
