Bench planes are planes with a single iron, meaning they do not have a chipbreaker, which in other planes ensures that the shaving is broken during removal. Breaking the shaving prevents the fibers of the wood from being lifted before the plane’s blade, due to the wood’s fiber structure, which would result in an uneven surface when planing. However, this does not matter with the bench plane. Its task is to quickly remove a lot of material, to roughly level, to „bench”.
The plane body is made of beech wood, and the plane’s sole is made of hornbeam.
