The sharpness of axes does not need to be as perfect as, for example, knives, chisels, or plane irons. While it is generally assumed that, for example, a chisel after sharpening with a 1000-grit water stone still requires the honing of the edge with a 6000-grit and/or 8000-grit stone, this step is unnecessary for an axe. After the first few strikes, you would immediately recognize that the effort of careful honing was superfluous as small nicks become visible right away. Therefore, a stone with 1000 grit or 800 grit is sufficient. It is more practical for axes to have a coarse grinding stone with 250 grit on hand to grind out small nicks. Before the 250-grit stone, you can use a flat file, which is very effective for Western hatchets and axes to remove larger nicks. Note: Japanese hatchets with multi-layer steel are usually too hard for files.
