In contrast to Japanese saws, Western saws, such as some of the dovetail saws and backsaws offered here, are generally not ready for use. They typically come with sufficient set, but in our opinion, they are not adequately sharpened. Even if manufacturers claim their saws are ready for use, you should not always take this at face value and be prepared to sharpen them with a file. Refer to our guide on sharpening saw blades (short) or, even better, Friedrich Kollenrott’s guide (PDF) (long). Important exception: the Veritas dovetail saws and backsaws are definitely ready for use. This is because the saw blades for the Veritas dovetail saws and backsaws are manufactured in Japan, where the technology for ready-to-use hand saws is available.
