Sharpening Tool
The sharpness of axes does not need to be as perfect as, for example, knives, chisels, or plane irons. While it is generally assumed that a chisel requires honing with a 6000 grit and/or 8000 grit stone after sharpening with a 1000 grit water stone, this step is unnecessary for an axe. After the first few swings, you would immediately notice that the effort of meticulous honing was unnecessary, as small nicks become apparent right away. Therefore, a stone with 1000 grit or 800 grit is sufficient. It is more practical to have a coarse grinding stone with 250 grit for axes to grind out small nicks. Before using the 250 grit stone, a flat file can be employed, which is very effective for removing larger nicks on Western hatchets and axes. Note: Japanese hatchets with multi-layered steel are usually too hard for files.
