Sharpening Tools
The sharpness of axes does not need to be as perfect as, for example, knives, chisels, or plane irons. While it is generally assumed that, for instance, a chisel would require honing the edge with a 6000 grit and/or 8000 grit stone after sharpening with a 1000 grit water stone, this step is unnecessary for an axe. After the first few chops, you would immediately recognize that the effort of careful honing was superfluous, as tiny notches become visible right away. Therefore, a stone with 1000 grit or 800 grit is sufficient. It is more practical to have a coarse roughing stone with 250 grit for axes to grind out small notches. Before using the 250 grit stone, a flat file can be employed, which is very effective for western hatchets and axes to also remove larger notches. Note: Japanese hatchets made of laminated steel are usually too hard for files.
