For a long time, carpenter’s chisels were not made from HSS steel at all, as it was not fine-grained enough to achieve really sharp edges—until it became possible to produce a relatively fine-grained version. The HSS steel of these chisels can be sharpened very sharply, but the far more outstanding property is the robustness of these chisels. With carbon steel, small parts of the edge break off relatively quickly with poor handling; this does not happen here. You can really get down to business without having to be particularly careful. The sharpening effort is slightly higher than with carbon steel.
