Tasai uses Blue Steel for the cutting layer and old nails for the backing material for these chisels. This results in a bizarre pattern that can vary significantly from chisel to chisel.
The chisel is slightly angled towards the handle. The advantage of this is that it allows for deeper, dimensionally accurate mortising than the length of the chisel suggests. However, this requires flat mirror surface edges even in the transition area to the shaft.
The handle of this version is made from red oak.
