Product information
Similar to the chalk line as we know it, the Sumitsubo functions in the same way, only it creates a finer line. Instead of dry chalk, as in Europe, ink granulate is dissolved in water and the cotton wadding is soaked with it. Pull the string through, stretch it, and snap it to create a fine, straight line. Traditional model, carved.
As simple as the Japanese carpenter kept his toolbox – decorations were considered show-off and frowned upon – these rules did not apply to the Sumitsubo. It was a symbol and was often left in the completed structure. Due to its ceremonial function, it was made by the carpenters themselves, sometimes with rich carvings.
