The critical dimension in inlay work (especially with strip inlays) is the thickness of the veneer used. If it’s too thick, the cut strip won’t fit into the groove. If it’s too thin, an unsightly gap will appear. With this tool, you can bring veneer—or any other thin material with a width of up to 63 mm (2-1/2 inches)—to exactly the thickness you need.
Instead of a sole that slides over the workpiece, this veneer scraper has two skids that glide on the surface (and not on the workpiece). The veneer lies between you and the body of the plane, so the skids also serve as a depth stop. The distance of the blade to the surface is set to match the width of the grooves for the inlays. (Simply use your groove tool as a spacer when setting the blade. This saves you from handling calipers or a micrometer.) Then work the veneer until the skids fully touch the surface.
The 70 mm (2-3/4 inch) wide blade is beveled on two sides at an angle of 45°. When one side becomes dull, you can simply turn the blade over. This means you have to sharpen it less often. The blade is held by two clamps with knurled brass nuts. The skids are 76 mm (3 inches) apart. This allows you to angle the tool to accommodate varying grain patterns and prevent chatter marks.
To speed up the production of inlays, you can attach the material to a piece of MDF or another flat material. If you screw the two included guide pins into the underside of the veneer scraper, you can use them as a guide to keep the plane on the material and the skids on the surface. This way, you can quickly and easily produce veneer strips of exact thickness.
The veneer scraper has an aluminum body, brass screws, and wooden handles. It measures approximately 260 mm (10-1/4 inches) x 76 mm (3 inches).
