Spiral groove cutters with alternating axial angles are used where both edges of a workpiece need to be clean, such as with veneer boards. This also means that the chips are pushed towards the center. You might wonder how chip removal is still ensured. The cutting edges of these cutters are offset by 90°, which ensures smooth chip removal. This is why these cutters always appear in photos as if the tip is thinner than the rest of the cutter, but it is not. Image 3 shows the same cutter from 3 perspectives.
The length of the right-hand spiral blades at the tip is 6 – 7 mm for cutters with an 8 mm shank and 11 – 12 mm for cutters with a 12 mm shank.
