Product information
Before matches became common around 1860, twisted wood shavings were used to transport fire from one place to another, for example, from the stove to a candle or lantern. A special plane was used to create twisted shavings. Shavings made with this tool burn slower and more evenly than paper or other tinder materials. The model for this plane is a design by Edward Preston from the 1850s, which is part of the Veritas collection.
Simply push a piece of straight-grained softwood, 16 mm – 19 mm wide, over the iron. The wood is guided in the sole, which is shaped like a channel to prevent lateral slipping. A curly shaving emerges from the side. A perforated stop on the plane body allows it to be easily hooked onto the edge of a table or screwed onto a wooden block.
A lovely gift for anyone with an open fireplace, wood-burning stove, or a fire pit in the garden!
Wood Selection: A rectangular piece with straight grain, free from knots and cracks, is necessary. The plane works very well with pine, but other softwoods like fir or spruce are also suitable.
