Initially, we were skeptical when these extremely affordable Japanese planes were offered to us. Can there be reasonable quality at this price? We had some of the small bench planes from this product line tested by carpenters – all of whom praised the quality of the iron. It is easy to sharpen and holds an edge very well. The wood block is somewhat rustic and requires reworking. The irons are forged from two layers of steel.
These handy little planes in an affordable and good design assist with many specialized tasks where you can’t get further with other tools. A good addition to your other Japanese tools!
For many delicate tasks, small hand planes are indispensable. Japanese hand planes are not ready to use and require some adjustments by the user, particularly reworking the mouth of the plane. A detailed guide on this can be found in the book by Toshio Odate: Japanese Woodworking Tools!
