Product information
Clean, tear-free holes with a flat bottom, whether you’re working with a machine or a hand brace, can be achieved with these auger bits from STAR-M of Japan. Japan boasts a great tradition of woodworking, and modern woodworking has spawned industries that meet the carpenter’s and joiner’s need for modern and excellent tools. Today, we benefit from superb quality and well-thought-out products like these auger bits.
These bits feature a curved, pronounced pre-cutter that produces a clean hole edge even at very slow speeds, such as in hand operation. The main cutter is shaped like a chisel, rotating around the threaded tip and shaving off layer by layer of wood within the circle cut by the pre-cutter. The threaded tip pulls the bit into the wood, requiring virtually no pressure. This threaded tip is finer than those on bits intended solely for hand operation. This is because a power drill would pull a bit with a coarsely threaded tip into the wood too quickly. Be careful, especially at the start of drilling, not to tilt the bit and to maintain the set direction. Otherwise, the tip may break, rendering the bit unusable.
These auger bits are suitable for all types of softwoods and European hardwoods such as beech and oak. They are not suitable for extremely hard tropical woods. Use either a suitable hand brace or a slow-running power drill. Do not let the bit overheat and frequently „vent,” meaning retract the bit with the drill running (do not pull out) to aid in chip removal and cool the bit. Work with minimal pressure! Not suitable for drill stands or bench drill presses!
