Slotted Saw Backs
Here you will find the suitable back for your saw, whether you want to build a small dovetail saw or a larger backsaw.
The surface of the brass backs is unfinished and the edges are sharp. The back can be relatively easily worked with a file to either add a chamfer or to shape and round it to mimic a traditionally folded back. The slot is precisely milled and requires only minor adjustments after installing the saw blade. The blade can be secured either with epoxy, screws, rivets, or by clamping in the slot (in the latter method, friction holds the blade in place, as with a folded back). The saw backs are made of brass.
The 9-inch (228 mm) long back has a cross-section of 3/16 × 5/8 inches (4.8 × 15.9 mm), the 10-inch (254 mm) long back 1/4 × 5/8 inches (6.35 × 15.9 mm), and the 12-inch (305 mm) long back 1/4 × 3/4 inches (6.35 × 19.05 mm).
The slot depth of the 9-inch back is 0.250 inches (6.35 mm), and that of the 10 and 12-inch backs is 0.300 inches (7.6 mm). The slot width corresponds to the saw blade thickness specified below.
