The relatively long sole ensures that surface irregularities are compensated for.
Additionally, the jointer plane is excellent for creating clean edges on solid wood. You’re probably familiar with the problem: What happens when you run a narrow board edgewise through the thickness planer? Often enough, it tilts and you end up with a non-perpendicular edge. Hold a right-angled block with your left hand under the sole and then run the jointer plane over the edge. The block can also be secured with a clamp, providing very good guidance.
The short jointer is equipped with a double iron (= iron with chip breaker). The cutting angle is 45°. The plane body is made of beechwood.
With its narrower iron, the short jointer is suitable for smaller surfaces, minimizing the effort required. If large surfaces need to be leveled, the „normal” jointer, due to its length and wider iron, is at an advantage and is the preferred plane of choice.
