In most European workbenches, the legs are connected to the aprons using screws. The biggest advantage of this connection is that you can tighten the screws when the wood dries out and the frame becomes wobbly.
The barrel nuts made of solid brass fit into appropriately drilled holes in the aprons and distribute the pressure from the screw to prevent the wood from tearing out. This way, you can build a very stable workbench without complicated wood joints by using wide aprons and fastening them with screws.
The steel screws are 152 mm long and have a diameter of 12.7 mm. The barrel nuts are 25 mm x 25 mm and fit into 25.4 mm (1 inch) holes. They also fit into 25 mm holes since they are slightly undersized.
