Saya Nomi - Japanese Scabbard Chisel Blade Width
9 mm KAWASEI
Available, delivery time: 2-3 days
Product information
"Saya Nomi" are very long, thinly forged chisels primarily used for the slots of scabbards for Japanese knives and swords. The edge is slightly rounded, allowing it to cut in the center of the blade first, enabling a gentle and sensitive entry into the wood. The flat side is slightly rounded over the width of the iron and therefore does not have a hollow grind as is common with other Japanese irons. The third slight, barely noticeable curvature extends over the length of the iron.
The shaft is bent upwards by about 12 – 13° to protect the knuckles.
The iron is forged from two layers and, after tempering, has a hardness of approximately 63 – 65 HRC.
Handle made from Japanese red oak. These irons should generally only be driven into the wood with the palm of the hand, or at most with light hammer blows.
Made by the blacksmith Kawasei in Yoita, Niigata Province.
