Note on the designations coarse – medium – fine: These are only used as additional descriptors to differentiate the stones colloquially from each other, but not to compare them with other stones, where completely different standards may apply. A fine 280 grit sharpening rod is not a fine Japanese water stone! If you compare the grit designation as a number, i.e., 100 – 180 – 280, then both types are comparable, as the European standard (FEPA F) and the Japanese standard (JIS) make little difference in this grit range.
