Product information
Makoto Aida is a renowned hammer smith in Japan. Under his brand SHINZAN, which loosely translates to ‚Deep Mountain’, he meticulously crafts hammers whose heads feature a so-called ‚Tsuchime’ pattern. This involves creating a surface texture with fine hammer blows that is then polished. The result is an intriguing surface that shifts in color to brownish and sometimes bluish hues. Selective hardening of the striking faces allows part of the recoil energy to be absorbed by the somewhat softer core of the steel, creating a sensation of increased effectiveness when striking, as less recoil energy is transferred to the wrist.
These hammers have one side of the hammerhead with a flat striking surface and the other with a slightly convex one. Depending on the need, either side can be used. The flat side is used, for example, for striking chisels or for driving tasks very close to the inner edges of workpieces. The sides of the hammerhead glide over the workpiece surface while the striking face remains perfectly perpendicular. This significantly increases the likelihood of driving a small nail straight at an inconvenient location. When driving nails with the nail head recessed, using the convex side prevents damage to the surrounding wood surface.
Delivered with a handle made of white oak.
