Atsu Nomi - Japanese Timber Chisel
12 mm White Paper Steel SHIGENOBU

Product information

Heavy, robust chisels made from White Paper Steel, forge-welded with a soft iron backing layer – suitable for all carpentry work.

This steel is renowned for its exceptional sharpness and edge retention. The smaller widths up to 18 mm come without side bevels, while the widths from 21 mm are equipped with side bevels. The hollow ground back (Ura) is simple on all chisels. The iron thickness at the bevel base for the narrower widths without side bevels is 8 to 10 mm, providing these narrow chisels with remarkable stability. For the wider chisels from 21 mm, the iron thickness at the bevel base is 6.5 to 7.5 mm.

The chisel is slightly offset towards the handle. The advantage is that you can chisel deeper with precision than the length of the chisel suggests. With these chisels, a depth of 130 mm with the narrower and up to 160 mm with the wider chisels can be achieved vertically. The prerequisite is having flat mirror side edges even in the area of transition to the shaft.

The steel ring over the red oak handle is hammered so that the end of the handle protrudes about 1 – 2 mm beyond the ring, ensuring that the hammer only strikes wood.

These Atsu Nomi are hand-forged and hand-ground, so small variations in width and length may occur. Like all Japanese chisels, they must be sharpened and honed before first use.

Made by master blacksmith Yoshio Usui under his brand name "SHIGENOBU" in Yoita, Niigata Prefecture.
