Product information
The chisels by Master Shibano from Miki City are meticulously crafted in every detail. The cutting layer is made from Blue Paper Steel (Aogami), a low-alloy carbon steel known for its good sharpenability, high edge retention, and the ability to achieve a high level of sharpness (depending on the user). The hardness is between 64 to 65 HRC. The soft backing layer is made from multi-folded steel (Suminagashi), giving these chisels a very decorative appearance. The steel ring over the white oak handle is flared so that the end of the handle protrudes about 1 – 2 mm beyond the ring, ensuring that only wood is struck when using a hammer. Simple Ura (hollow grind) on the back side for all sizes. These chisels are hand-forged and hand-ground, so slight dimensional variations in width may occur. Like all Japanese chisels, they must be sharpened and honed before first use. The chisels are overall between 220 and 225 mm long and, like most other Japanese chisels, feature a slightly angled tang to allow for deeper chiseling than the blade length.
Noteworthy about Master Shibano’s chisels is the fact that they are forged slightly thinner than standard chisels. This is especially noticeable with the wider chisels. For instance, a 30 mm Shibano chisel is 3.5 mm thick at the bevel’s base, whereas a standard chisel is 5 mm. The difference is significantly less with the narrower chisels, with the 12 mm chisel being only 4 mm compared to 4.5 mm. Thinner chisels allow for more comfortable work in tight spaces, but prying should be avoided to prevent breakage.
