Product information
This Rafter Square, also known as a Speed Square, combines the functions of a try square, combination square, carpenter’s square, and saw guide, and is shaped like a right triangle with a fence on one cathetus. The edge of the other cathetus is equipped with a mm scale. Under the mm scale, there is a groove with notches to easily mark half and whole centimeters with a pencil. At a 90° angle to this groove, parallel to the fence, there is another groove with a cm scale, whose zero point is at the edge.
The hypotenuse opposite the right angle features a degree scale for measuring angles. To mark the saw cut, place the square’s fence edge against the board and press it at the pivot point (marked on the square: PIVOT). Rotate the other end away from the board edge until the edge and desired angle degree align. Now the cutting line can be marked. Please note that you should always cut the complementary angle: if you set 30° at the edge, you are marking 60°!
Parallel to the degree scale, there is another groove with two scales for roof cuts, the upper one for hip rafters (marked on the square: HIP-VAL) and the lower one for common rafters (marked on the square: COMMON). More on this in this video from Hultafors (in English).
