RICHTER Chisel with Long Handle 1/8" NAREX

Product information

In these chisels, the blades correspond to those of the standard series. However, the noticeably longer overall length is achieved not by an extended blade but by a significantly longer handle. This makes these tools akin to what are known as paring chisels. Although a wooden mallet can still be used with these chisels, the long handle invites the user to guide the chisel predominantly with a delicate touch and purely manually.

The primary application is in the finishing of wood joints. Here, the focus is less on powerful removal and more on controlled, fine adjustments. The chisel is generally guided by hand or with light support from the palm. The large overall length facilitates a steady, precise guidance and allows for the removal of the finest shavings.

Paring chisels, which are particularly popular in the Anglo-American regions, are used precisely for this type of work. The unusual length enhances control during purely hand-guided use. Accordingly, the widths follow imperial measurements rather than metric equivalents.

The side bevels are deeply extended and taper to a very thin edge profile. This allows access to hard-to-reach areas, such as the tight corners of dovetail joints. This geometry significantly improves accessibility without compromising the tool’s stability in typical use.

The iron is drop-forged from chrome-vanadium steel and subsequently cryogenically („KRYO”) treated to achieve a hardness of at least 62 HRC. The fine grinding ends in a smooth polish. The back is already very well ground at the factory, requiring only a comparatively minimal effort to achieve a perfectly flat surface.

The cutting angle is set to 24°, making it more suitable for fine work and softer woods. If needed, an additional micro-bevel can be added to create a larger cutting angle. This allows the tool to be incrementally adapted to the specific application: a shallow angle reduces cutting resistance, while a steeper angle increases the cutting edge’s stability.

The handle is made from European ash, a wood known for its hardness, toughness, and distinct grain. It is ergonomically shaped, finely sanded, and polished. The handle is sanded and polished by hand. The wood is treated with oil, which keeps the natural grain visible. A stainless steel ferrule protects the handle from splitting, while a leather disc at the transition to the blade dampens blows when working with a wooden mallet.

The chisels are part of the RICHTER series by NAREX. This series was developed to commemorate the company’s hundredth anniversary and is named after the founder Vaclav Richter. Following the success of the standard-sized chisels, the series was expanded to include additional variants that cover different working methods and requirements.
