These unusual spiral drills from Star-M in Japan feature an extremely smooth surface and a very deep flute. Both characteristics allow for very clean drill holes and good chip removal. Due to their precise construction, pre-cutters are unnecessary with these drills; in fact, they could disturb the drilling pattern if they become dull. And that can happen quickly, as pre-cutters are the most vulnerable part of the drill. The cutting edge is slightly angled, preventing a jerky drilling start and allowing for a clean hole edge.
The highlight: these drills are available in 0.1 mm increments from 2 mm to 8 mm in diameter, making them ideal for highly demanding woodworking tasks. These intermediate sizes are also very useful when a slight undersize or oversize is needed, for example, movable wheels on a rigid wooden axle or an extreme press fit for wooden dowels. Made from HSS steel with a hardness of 63 HRC! The shank diameter always corresponds to the drill diameter. You can use almost the entire length of the drill. To do this, simply subtract the portion that fits into the chuck from the total length.
