The plane stops by Benchcrafted are made of steel. The teeth are milled into the stops and then lightly deburred with sandpaper to preserve the tips. The stops are delivered sharp and ready for use.
The plane stop is attached to a piece of wood using two threaded screws and a barrel nut with two threads (in the same way that the bases of workbenches are mounted using Benchcrafted hardware). This allows it to be securely fastened and also prevents twisting. Additionally, it’s easy to retighten the stop if it becomes loose due to the wood’s movement where it’s attached. It can also be easily disassembled for sharpening. Simply remove the two screws and clamp the stop in a vise to file the teeth at a 90° angle.
While it is not absolutely necessary, it is helpful to recess the stop slightly into the end grain of the block of wood on which it sits. This allows the forces introduced into the stop by the workpiece to be better absorbed. If the block on which the stop sits fits snugly into the hole of the workbench, you can easily adjust the height of the stop with a few hammer taps.
