These Japanese smoothing planes with a stepped sole feature a laminated carbon steel blade that is 8 mm thick. A chip breaker helps – with appropriately fine adjustment – to avoid tear-out in the wood. The large space for chip removal upwards effectively prevents clogging, of course, only if the plane is correctly adjusted. The plane is correctly adjusted when the chip breaker is set as close as possible to the cutting edge (less than 1 mm) and the blade is adjusted so that only a thin shaving is taken.
The blade should be sharpened and honed before use. The plane iron bed may need to be slightly widened. The body is made of white oak. Both planes offered are 258 mm long.
