Product information
MEIMON is the premium brand of Tsunesaburo. The blade is hand-forged from a special carbon steel with higher edge wear resistance than, for example, Blue Paper Steel (Aogami No. 1).
This cutting layer is forge-welded with a soft iron, for which anchor chains from the 19th century are used. Steel for anchor chains in the 19th century was softer than today and not as wear-resistant.
The soft backing layer of the iron should really be soft, which is why this material is in high demand among blacksmiths in Japan. The low wear resistance of the soft backing iron also has the advantage that the plane blade is easier to sharpen. The soft forge-welded backing layer itself is left as-forged and thus has a very rustic appearance. Small voids and hairline cracks are part of its appearance. The purpose of this soft backing layer is solely to make sharpening easier for the user. The blacksmith places his stamp on this rough surface.
The body is made of white oak, with special attention paid to a favorable grain direction for this plane.
