A leather strop is a popular alternative to a 10000 or 12000 grit water stone for honing knives. The soft leather is adhered to a layer of foam rubber, which acts as a soft buffer between the leather and the wooden base. This wooden base is also covered with foam rubber on the underside, making it non-slip.
For honing, hold the knife at an angle of 40 to 45° in both the vertical and horizontal directions. The honing motion always moves away from the blade, as shown in the illustration on the left! Otherwise, the leather will only be cut!
