The sharpening stone manufacturer SIGMA Power Corporation from Tokyo aims its top-of-the-line Select II series at users of high-alloy steels such as HSS. Even with these stones, the effort to create a sharpening feel similar to that of natural stones is evident. Unlike resin, magnesium, or cement-bonded stones, the Select II stones do not have binders. Instead, these stones use the vitrification process to bind the grains. By increasing the viscosity during the cooling of the sharpening stone mass, crystallization is prevented, resulting in amorphous material similar to the production of glass. This process is expensive, but the Sigma Select II are true steel eaters.
Not only is steel quickly removed, but the stone is also worn down rapidly – so quite a bit of slurry is produced during sharpening – the price of speed! Therefore, it needs to be dressed more frequently, but this process is very quick with this stone.
