Japanese Saw Ryoba
270 mm White Paper Steel Octopus Series SHINSUI NAKAYA

Product information

Shinsui Nakaya began his apprenticeship as a sawsmith at the age of 15. After over ten years of training, he founded his own saw manufacturing company at the age of 26 and now – at the age of 76 (in 2014) - looks back on 62 years of experience in saw production. He lives and works in Sanjo, Niigata Prefecture.

Traditionally, in Japan, when a manufacturing company is founded, the name of the master is incorporated into the company name of the founder in some form, and he continues to exert influence in the following years. Shinsui Nakaya decided that 10 years of training is enough and has been using only his name as the company name since the founding over 50 years ago.

He developed his own oil-based quenching method, which is applied after forging and significantly reduces the risk of warping and cracking.

Why is not every Japanese saw suitable for beginners and trainees?

Most Japanese standard saws are made from band steel. The expensive professional saws are all through-hardened.
