The grinding stone manufacturer SIGMA Power Corporation from Tokyo targets users of high-alloy steels such as HSS with its top range Select II. Even with these stones, the effort to create a grinding feel similar to that of natural stones is visible. Unlike resin, magnesium, or cement-bonded stones, the Select II have no binders. Instead, these stones use the vitrification process to bind the grains. By increasing the viscosity during the cooling of the grinding stone mass, crystallization is prevented, resulting in amorphous material similar to glass production. This process is expensive, but in return, the Sigma Select II are true steel eaters.
Steel is not the only thing that is quickly removed, but also the stone itself – a considerable amount of slurry is produced during grinding – the price for speed! Therefore, it needs to be dressed more often, but this is done very quickly with this stone.
