This small bench vise functions in principle like a tail vise, except that it is recessed directly into the workbench. The jaw is removable, allowing the surface above the Inset Vice to be used when not in use.
The workpiece is clamped between the included jaw and an external bench dog, shown in the picture as the round Veritas bench dog on the left. Theoretically, the length of the workpiece is not limited. The 12.7 mm thick threaded rod is turned using a crank. The adjustment travel is a maximum of 100 mm. The jaw itself is relatively low: 12.7 mm high and 20 mm wide, and can be inserted at two positions that are 86 mm apart. A small vertical T-slot rail in the jaw allows for the mounting of custom-made pads.
The Inset Vice is simply recessed into a mortised or milled recess in a workbench that should be at least 32 mm thick. Stressed parts are made of steel, and the housing is made of anodized aluminum.
The sketches are mostly self-explanatory and dimensioned in inches (1 inch = 25.4 mm).
