With the help of this simple attachment for the Veritas plough plane (No. 307860), you can create flat grooves for inlays and other inserts. By using the plane’s fence and depth fine adjustment, you can precisely determine the position and depth of the groove.
The inlay groove attachment features two blades with single-sided bevels, allowing you to precisely score the edges of the grooves. It doesn’t matter whether you work across the grain, with the grain, or diagonally to it. Using a chisel or a suitable iron (the iron should be no wider than the desired groove) for the plough plane, you can then quickly and easily clean out the grooves.
The included set of spacers and shims allows you to create grooves with widths ranging from 1.5 mm (1/16 inch) to 12 mm (15/32 inch). The set contains five shims in four different thicknesses (0.05 mm (0.002 inch), 0.13 mm (0.005 inch), 0.25 mm (0.01 inch), 0.51 mm (0.02 inch)) and one steel spacer each with a thickness of 1.0 mm (0.04 inch), 2.0 mm (0.08 inch), and 3.0 mm (0.12 inch).
To create a groove parallel to a straight edge of the workpiece, a fence (available as an accessory for the plough plane) is used, allowing the inlay groove attachment’s blades to be guided at a precisely defined distance from the edge of the workpiece. To follow curved edges, you can use the brass follower (included with the inlay groove attachment) and screw it onto the fence’s guide rod instead of the straight fence.
Replacement blades are available upon request.
