Product information
The drawknife sharpener by BENCHCRAFTED is a simple yet intelligently designed tool for creating razor-sharp edges on any type of drawknife. Typically, drawknives are sharpened by hand, holding the drawknife in one hand and the honing stone in the other. This process is not only complicated and requires a lot of experience, but it is also dangerous, especially for beginners. The drawknife sharpener from BENCHCRAFTED allows you to fully focus on sharpening your drawknife without having to worry about holding the stone at the correct angle to the edge, and without fear for your fingers.
When using the BENCHCRAFTED drawknife sharpener, the blade always faces away from your body and fingers. The sharpening motion is parallel to the blade, and your fingers are always safely behind the blade.
If you have previously avoided using drawknives because sharpening seemed too complicated, the drawknife sharpener from BENCHCRAFTED opens the door for you to use these wonderful tools, whether you are making chairs or using drawknives for other woodworking tasks.
The back of the drawknife runs on a wear plate made of acetal plastic and is guided by two nylon guides. These guides, along with the position of the two pins, determine the sharpening angle. One pin is used for sharpening the bevel and the other for honing the back.
A clearly readable scale for each pin allows you to note the exact position of the pins you used for a specific drawknife. The next time you sharpen, you can quickly reset these positions.
Each of the two pins is equipped with a sleeve featuring two sharpening pads: one is coated with fine diamonds, and the other with even finer sandpaper. Use the diamond side to grind the initial burr on the edge, and the other side to further polish the edge. Each sleeve sits on a ring-shaped bearing made from the loop side of a Velcro fastener. This allows the sleeve to rotate on the pin, ensuring that the sharpening pad remains in full contact with the edge, even on curved knives.
The pins can be quickly and precisely adjusted using two large knurled nuts.
To sharpen a drawknife, hold it like a violin. Then move the drawknife sharpener back and forth along the drawknife with your other hand. Hold the drawknife sharpener in whichever way is most comfortable for you—palm up, down, or to the side.
