Grinding device for rounded irons for MK.II sharpening guide VERITAS
The Veritas MK II sharpening guide is designed to grind repeatably precise right-angled bevels on chisels and plane blades. However, when using a smoothing plane to work on larger surfaces, it is desirable to create a slight curve or camber when honing the plane blade. This tapers the shaving towards the sides, preventing grooves from the edges of the plane blade on the surface of the workpiece.
The Veritas sharpening device for rounded blades has a convex (barrel-shaped) roller that allows the sharpening guide to be easily tilted to both sides while maintaining the bevel angle precisely. Simply replace the straight standard roller of your sharpening guide with the convex version and hone the plane blade. Initially apply a bit more pressure on one side of the blade, then on the other.
(Grinding the bevel, especially on coarse stones, should be done with the straight roller / Note from our knowledgeable translator!)
The convex roller contains the same eccentric mechanism for grinding a second bevel (micro-bevel) as the straight standard roller. The setting gauge of the sharpening guide is still used for precisely adjusting the bevel angle.
