Veneer plane by Veritas

A veneer smoothing plane is a very useful and versatile tool. It is not only - as the name suggests - a tool for cleaning delicate veneer surfaces, but also for cleaning a dirty planing bench top, for removing dried glue squeeze-out, and last but not least for clean, tear-free processing of wild-growing wood surfaces.

This plane comes with some improvements compared to the well-known veneer smoothing planes No. 80. It is ergonomically shaped so that the pressure of the hand is directed exactly towards the blade. The sole of the plane is slightly longer, and the handles are positioned further back and lower. This prevents the plane from tipping over immediately when it is guided beyond the end of the work surface.

The iron is 70 mm wide and has two cutting edges. Both are ground to a bevel angle of 45 °, just like the irons of a scraper plane. The cast body that holds the blade is shaped to securely protect the unused cutting edge on the back side - both from damage and the user from injury.

This veneer smoothing plane is made of tough special cast iron that can withstand a fall onto the floor without breaking. The iron is held in place by 2 screws, with the middle screw serving to slightly bend the iron, preventing the sharp edges from leaving grooves in the wood.

The sole is 95 mm long and 85 mm wide. The total length is 292 mm. The weight is approximately 750 g.

Instructions in English. However, since the sharpening process is the same as with the scraper plane, please refer to this instruction available in German.
