Product information
Drawknives are versatile tools used for debarking logs, refining and adjusting beams and timbers during renovation, and are essential tools for creative work by sculptors. Bow makers also appreciate the versatility of this tool.
A drawknife is so named because it is meant to be drawn. It should not be pushed, as this can release forces that you may no longer control if your hand slips off the handle. Risk of injury! If the drawknife gets stuck in the wood, do not use it as a lever to lift the chip, instead, try to pull it back out.
Sharpening a drawknife is always somewhat more difficult than sharpening a plane blade or chisel, because the handles are almost always in the way. We recommend placing a sharpening stone in an elevated and secure position so that when moving the blade on the stone, the handles can move freely without catching on anything. For a decent edge on large drawknives, a water stone with a grit of 1000 to 1200 is sufficient. If you desire an excellent edge, which is only sensible for the small drawknives from Frost and Veritas, a secondary bevel should be worked with a water stone grit of 4000 or 6000. One more note: The harder and more knotty the wood, the larger the edge angle should be. For soft wood and fine work, 25° or slightly less is sufficient, while for coarser and harder wood, you can confidently go up to 35°.
