Product information
The name Daruma Hammer traces back to the Buddhist monk Bodhidharma (Japanese: Daruma) and the round traditional Japanese Daruma doll modeled after him. In any case, it seems that roundness played a role in the naming. A Daruma Hammer is essentially a sledgehammer primarily used for chiseling and carving work. Its large striking surface ensures increased accuracy when hitting chisels and carving tools, which your fingers will be grateful for.
Makoto Aida is a well-known hammer smith in Japan. Under his brand SHINZAN, which translates to „Deep Mountain,” he produces carefully crafted hammers whose head features a „Tsuchime” pattern. This pattern is created with fine hammer blows that form a textured surface, which is then polished. The result is an intriguing surface that shifts in color to brownish and sometimes bluish hues. Selective hardening on the striking surfaces allows a portion of the rebound energy to be absorbed by the somewhat softer core of the steel. This creates a feeling of increased effectiveness when striking, as less rebound energy is transferred to the wrist. Compared to the head size, the handle is relatively short, contributing to better control of the strike.
These hammers have a flat striking surface on one side of the hammerhead and a slightly convex one on the other. Depending on the need, either side can be used. Delivered with a handle made of white oak.
