Product information
Even if you have little experience, with the help of the Veritas System 32 Hole Drilling Jig, you can build all the cabinets for a complete kitchen yourself. Besides the hole drilling jig, all you need is a drill, a circular saw, a few clamps, and simple hand tools. The hole drilling jig is also great for building freestanding wardrobes, stereo and video furniture, bookshelves, and a variety of built-in cabinets.
Practically all good kitchen fittings today are based on European developments that emerged after World War II. A system was developed for cabinet construction using 5 mm and 8 mm diameter holes with a standardized 32 mm spacing for dowels, shelf supports, drawer slides, and hinges. Due to the frameless construction (as opposed to the front frame construction common in North America), the system consists of a series of boxes with standardized components. Left and right sides are as interchangeable as the bottoms and tops. Since the hole pattern is designed to accommodate various fittings, individual units can be reconfigured at any time. This also allows for last-minute changes during cabinet construction.
With the Veritas System 32 Hole Drilling Jig, all holes have a consistent spacing of 32 mm and the correct distance from the sides and ends of the panels. For easier handling, the gauge features both a metric scale and an inch scale. Even though you can design and measure everything in inches, we still recommend using metric measurements to avoid rounding errors.
In professional applications, metric measurements are used because only three types of panels are needed, all of which are symmetrical. Symmetrical means that the panels can be rotated from top to bottom or from front to back without changing the hole pattern. This makes the left and right side panels interchangeable, just like the tops and bottoms. The instruction manual for the hole drilling jig (in English) describes exactly how to produce symmetrical, semi-symmetrical, and normal panels.
After cutting all the panels, first apply edge banding or solid wood edges to all visible edges. Place the hole drilling jig on one of the side panels and position the rails 37 mm apart (37 mm is the standard distance to the front edge for all European fittings). Clamp the rails in place. Now you can create the system holes (vertical holes for screws, inserts, shelf supports, and hinges) and the construction holes (horizontal holes for dowels). Position the bushing holder on the rail so that the selected bushing sits at the point on the rail where the first hole is to be drilled. Drill the holes needed for your construction. The clamping bridges for the doweling jig (which allow you to convert one of the rails into a doweling jig) enable dowel holes to be drilled into the ends of the bottoms and tops. Assemble the box now. The dowels help ensure a right-angled result.
The Deluxe version of the Veritas System 32 Hole Drilling Jig comes with an instruction manual (in English). This includes detailed descriptions of the various applications of the hole drilling jig, as well as a description of the basic procedure for making a cabinet from particle board. The same procedure can also be applied to cabinets made from solid wood panels or plywood.
