Product information
The Veritas woodworker’s mallet combines the advantages of iron and wooden hammers. The former are often too heavy, and the latter often too clumsy. With this mallet, you can strike chisels without deforming their shaft ends like a mushroom. The head is slightly curved (see image) so that you always have the correct striking angle when working with the wrist.
The wooden inserts are made from fine-grained and dry hardwood. They are long-lasting; however, for example, when striking steel chisels, the lifespan can be significantly shortened.
The damaged wooden insert can be removed by drilling a series of holes in a line through the middle of the wooden insert. Be careful not to drill into the bottom of the brass cavity, which is about 20 mm deep. Then, pry out the two wooden halves with a flat-head screwdriver or a small nail puller. A new wooden insert should have a diameter of 40 mm and a length of 25 mm. Use fine-grained hardwood whose moisture content has already adapted to the existing climate in the workshop for some time.
The interior surfaces of the brass cavity are ribbed, thus holding the wooden insert securely even if it has shrunk slightly due to fluctuations in air humidity. Even if it feels a bit loose, it usually does not fall out. If it does, you used wood that was too moist during installation.
