A2 steel as a material for plane irons is gaining popularity among woodworkers because its edge stays sharp for an exceptionally long time. This steel differs from carbon steel by the addition of 0.7% manganese, 5.0% chromium, 1.1% molybdenum, and 0.25% vanadium. Additionally, this steel undergoes a cryogenic treatment that increases the toughness of the steel without affecting its hardness (62 HRC). This significantly reduces edge chipping when working with challenging woods. To avoid confusion, all A2 irons from Hock are marked with „A2 Cryo.” For bench planes only!
