After the introduction of the scrub plane, Veritas was surprised to find that users not only use it for the rough removal of material, but also utilize the aggressively curved iron to give surfaces a roughly worked, rustic appearance.
The 38 mm wide rounded iron supplied with the plane is well-suited for working on larger pieces such as planks or timber frames. However, for cabinets and small furniture, it is too large. Therefore, Veritas designed these fluting irons. The wavy irons cut several small grooves simultaneously. This creates a surface that normally would only be achievable with much time and effort using a gouge.
