The iron adjustment of a metal hand plane should always be operated with the blade slightly loosened, by slightly lifting the cam lever of the cap iron. If one attempts to turn the adjustment knob with the blade firmly tightened, as often happens to the less experienced, this small y-shaped brass yoke will break. This yoke can only be as sturdy as brass allows. We have often been asked why we don’t make it from steel. Quite simply: something else on the plane would break, which would certainly be more expensive.
