Product information
These saws are constructed and designed using the same principles as the VERITAS dovetail saws described above. The American term „carcass saw” refers to a backsaw that is larger than a dovetail saw but somewhat smaller than a tenon saw. It was typically used for working on the parts of drawers and frame construction furniture, hence the name (carcass = framework, skeleton, corpus). This saw is available in both rip cut and crosscut versions. The crosscut version has a tooth spacing of 1.8 mm. The rake angle is 14°, the angle between the tooth back and the tooth front is 60°, and the teeth are alternately set with 15° (known as „fleam” in English) to ensure the fibers are cleanly cut and not just torn – see Fig. B. The set is relatively small, just under 0.1 mm to each side. With a blade thickness of 0.5 mm, this results in a kerf of just under 0.7 mm. The saw back is made from an injection-molded plastic containing stainless steel powder to give the saw weight. The saw is well-balanced and cuts easily and accurately. The comfortable open pistol grip made from Bubinga provides the feeling that the saw is a natural extension of the human arm. The carbon steel saw blade is 279 mm long and 0.5 mm thick, allowing for a cutting depth of 60 mm. The total length of the saw with the handle is 416 mm. Weight is around 400 g. Since the saw blade is made from carbon steel, it is resharpenable but not rust-free. Occasional oiling is recommended.
